Passage 1

In the United States, 30 percent of the adult population has a “weight problem”. To many people, the cause is obvious: they eat too much. But scientific evidence does little to support this idea. Going back to the America of the 1910s, we find that people were thinner than today, yet they ate more food. In those days people worked harder physically, walked more, used machines much less and didn’t watch television.

Several modern studies, moreover, have shown that fatter people do not eat more on the average than thinner people. In fact, some investigations, such as the 1979 study of 3,545 London office workers, report that, on balance, fat people eat less than slimmer people. Studies show that slim people are more active than fat people. A study by a research group at Stanford University School of Medicine found the following interesting facts: The more the men ran, the more body fat they lost.

Quiz 1 Quiz The more they ran, the greater amount of food they ate. Thus, those who ran the most ate the most, yet lost the greatest amount of body fat. (183 words)

of a “weight problem?” B

Passage 2

Popeye the Sailor (大力水手) first became a popular cartoon in the 1930s. The sailor in that carton ate lots of spinach (菠菜) to make him strong. People watched him, and they began to buy and eat a lot more spinach. Popeye helped sell 33 percent more spinach than before! Spinach became a necessary part of many people’s diets. Even some children who hated the taste began to eat the vegetable.

Many people thought that the iron in spinach made Popeye strong, but this is not true. Spinach does not have any more iron than any other green vegetable. People only thought spinach had a lot of iron because the people who studied the food made a mistake. In the 1890s, a group of people studied what was inside vegetables. This group said that spinach had ten times more iron than it did. The group wrote the number wrong, and everyone accepted it.

Today, we know that the little iron there is in spinach cannot make a difference in how strong a person is. However, spinach does have something else which the body needs –folic acid (叶酸,维生素B). (203 words)

Quiz 1 Quiz 要求在30分钟内,根据下面所给的题目用英语写出一篇不少于80词的短文。

On Health and Wealth (谈健康与财富)

“Wealth and health” is an eternal topic through out the ancient times and today. As a

result there were many people including philosophers and some outstanding writers who hold different opinions about it.

On the one hand some of them think it is so important to have a large amount of wealth that they can abandon everything including health. The original ideal of wealth being able to buy health came from a poet in Rome. Obviously they believe with a lot of money they would get house, power and position even the happiness they want. Well, it’s clear that they have much focused on wealth and ignored that wealth has little to do with health.

On the other hand some of them don’t agree those mentioned above. They believe health is more important than wealth saying that health can help you get wealth but once you lose health you’ll have nothing including wealth. It’s clear that this opinion is more reasonable and which I would agree with.

Firstly, we all know well about a saying that the value of your life is like “1” which followed many zero, and the health is just the “1”. If you drop “1” the health of your own, no matter how many zero after “1” they all come to zero. That is to say health is the cornerstone on one’s life, if not he will have nothing.

Secondly, weather you’ll be wealthy depend on how healthy you are. It is well known that a person can make a large fortune if he has the right opportunities during his life. But if the person suffers from a terrible illness, then no matter how much money he may earn, he will still lead a miserable life.

Moreover, business is based on health. Students in good health can absorb knowledge more readily. In good health, scientists can tackle complex technical problems and achieve more success.

In a word, health is more important than wealth.
